If you’re a farmer, or even just looking to provide for your family, raising grass-fed cattle is a worthwhile investment. Diversifying out of simple grain-fed cattle, or adding to your stock with grass-fed cattle, can help you appeal to community interest by following a trend that’s sure to last for years to come. As consumers become more health and environmentally conscious, they’re turning to ways they can incorporate that into their daily lives.
Grass-fed beef is a great way to be part of that. In today’s blog, we’ll explore some tips for starting up your grass-fed cattle herd for your ranch or family. Visit our blog for more ways you can give your grass-fed cattle the best care.
Land
Having enough land for your cattle to roam and gain nutrients is one of the most important aspects of raising cows. You should be able to supply half an acre per cow for five to six months of their growing period. Keep in mind your soil quality; the area should be fairly flat, and not too wet or rocky. Grass choice is important; you can see several of our favorites on our blog.
Pasture Rotation
Controlled pastured rotation has actually been found to help preserve the valuable land area you have and continuously nurture your cattle, saving you money from buying feed (and keeping your nutrition value high). Allow forage to regrow and the cattle’s natural fertilizer to work by rotating your cattle to different areas. Remember that a strong, ventilated shelter is important to proper rotation.
Fencing
Allow your cattle to freely roam within their paddock and get exercise to maintain their health with smooth wire fencing.
Irrigation
Having a working irrigation and drainage system that provides clean water remains pivotal. Protect the health of the grass, which is your cattle’s main nutrition source, as well as the health of the cattle with their drinking water.
